Wederliefde is an interactive experience I created together with game designer Meta Scholtens. I created the visuals, opting for a mixed media aesthetic to convey a heartfelt feeling.
Wederliefde is played by two people sharing a single keyboard.
Throughout five different chapters, the players explore different stages of an intimate bond. The story is experienced through a combination of poetry, interactions and visuals.
Central to the experience is the heart-shaped machine. It is a consistent metaphor for the different phases of the bond between the two players: the love, the argument, and the re-connection.
The final chapter of the game sees the two players reconnect after their conflict. They build their machine back up with the broken pieces. New colors and feelings flow through it.
We wanted to create something that is abstract and unique to allow players to form their own interpretation of the story.
Wederliefde features a mixed media aesthetic: our goal was to create an something that feels like an interactive journal or painting. Each chapter features an animated background, which I created by mixing watercolor with digital animation.
Before I had decided to work with watercolor, I wanted to capture the feeling I wanted to convey in each chapter digitally.
Spring: first meeting
Fall: conflict
Summer: love in bloom
Winter: loneliness
Love in Return
The flower sprites were made by creating top-down renders of 3D models. Textures were made by painting on top of a projected UV map.
If Meta and I had more time to develop this project, our vision would be to turn Wederliefde into an installation instead of a computer game. We think it would create a more immersive experience. Additionally, this would allow for custom buttons, making the experience more intuitive for our target audience of non-gamers.
