Layered is an interactive narrative which is played completely on paper. The player walks by the illustrations on the table and interacts with them in various ways to progress the story. Layered was made in my second year of university, in the span of eight weeks. It was my first time designing an interactive narrative. This is the project that made me realize I have an interest in game creation beyond creating only the visual art.
Each illustration has a unique interaction tied to it, for example: writing, drawing, cutting, making a collage, tearing something up or painting!
It was very rewarding to think about how I could convey the story with tactile interactions. I primarily did this by focusing on using the thinness of paper as a metaphor for vulnerability in social connections.
During one of the two possible endings, the player creates a collage of the previously torned up material to symbolize the repair of the friendship between the characters.
