Dr. Avril Haye Matsui is a lecturer at Aichi Prefectural University in Central Japan. Her research areas are intersectionality, gender, teacher identity, and social justice in ELT. Her PhD research explored the lived experiences and professional identity development of women of the African Diaspora who work and reside in Japan. Dr. Matsui is co-founder of the support and friendship group, Black Women in Japan, and is the founder of the Women’s Empowerment Circle, a personal and professional coaching group for women.
In this interactive keynote, Dr. Matsui will discuss the theory of intersectionality and its shape and form in Japan for one specific group of English language teaching professionals: women of the African Diaspora (Black women) who reside and work in Japan. Dr. Matsui will describe the ways in which her recent research underscores the profound impact of the intersection of multiple factors, particularly race and, gender on a teacher’s professional and personal identity development. This talk aims to broaden our understanding of intersectionality while focusing on the formation of teacher identity in global contexts and as such will discuss themes that are applicable to educators worldwide. Finally, Dr. Matsui will encourage the audience to reflect on the ways in which acknowledging and understanding our intersectional identities can contribute to our personal self-empowerment, and how this can, in turn, help us to empower our colleagues, students, and others.
アヴリル・ヘイ・松井氏： 現在愛知県立大学教員。研究分野は、インターセクショナリティ、ジェンダー、教師としてのアイデンティティ、英語教育における社会正義など。博士論文では、日本で働き生活するアフリカ系ディアスポラの女性の生活体験と職業的アイデンティティの形成について研究。「Black Women in Japan」という支援グループの共同創設者であり、また、女性のための個人的および職業的コーチンググループ「Women’s Empowerment Circle」の創設者でもある。
本基調講演では英語教育に携わる特定のグループ、すなわち日本で生活し働くアフリカ系ディアスポラ（黒人）女性について、インターセクショナリティ理論とその日本における形や様式について対話型手法を用いて論じます。自身の最近の研究が、特に人種やジェンダーといった複数の要因の交差が教師の職業上および個人的なアイデンティティ形成に与える重大な影響を強調していることを説明します。本講演では、グローバルな文脈における教師としてのアイデンティティの形成に焦点を当てながら、交差性に関する理解を深めることを目的としています。また、世界中の教育者に当てはまるテーマについても議論します。最後に、交差するアイデンティティを認識し理解することが、個人の自己強化にどのように貢献できるか、また、それが同僚や生徒、その他の人々の強化にもどのように役立つかについて、聴衆と共に探求できるよう促します。

本講演では、日本で生活する在日コリアンの歴史と現状を通して、多様な文化的背景を持つ個人が、多様化する社会をどのように乗り越えていくのかを探る。 エスニシティ、文化、国籍の重なり合う体験に焦点を当てながら、アイデンティティの交差性を検証し、これらの要素が多文化的アイデンティティを持つ人々の生活をどのように形作っているのかを考えます。また、社会からの期待や課題の中で、社会から疎外された人々やマイノリティ・グループの人々が、いかにして「自分らしく生きる」-正々堂々と、主体性を持って-努力をすることができるかを取り上げる。
A collaborator with the Center for the Study of World Human Rights of first-generation Koreans in Japan, Nam will delve into the complexities faced by individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds living in a heterogeneous society. Drawing from her extensive experience with the NPO Kyoto Korean Life Support Center, LFA since 2002, Nam will discuss the unique history and contemporary issues faced by first-generation Koreans in Japan. The lecture will focus on the intersecting layers of ethnicity, culture, and nationality to explore how these dimensions influence identity formation and societal participation among multicultural populations.
Nam will also address the challenges and strategies for marginalized and minority groups striving to maintain their authenticity and autonomy amidst prevailing societal norms. Through her roles in various steering committees, including the Network for Supporting the Lives of Korean Senior Citizens in Japan, Hana, and the Kyoto Multicultural Support Network, she will provide insights into the collaborative efforts aimed at fostering inclusivity and supporting the elderly and disabled within diverse communities. This discussion promises to illuminate the paths toward living “together” as oneself, accepted and respected within the fabric of society.
