Maru
Maru - Circle inspired by the rich history of Japanese dolls like the Hitogata and Hina Ningyo – small, handcrafted objects imbued with wishes and protective energies since at least the Heian era – "Maru - Circle" is a video installation that transforms this cultural significance into a contemporary contemplative experience. The artwork reflects the deep, personal connection between the Japanese people and these dolls, moving beyond their function as simple toys.
Through a circular projection of light, "Maru - Circle" embodies a floating disk of video that suggests both a planet and a microscopic organism in constant, colorful motion. This imagery, drawn from the artist's residency in Iwatsuki Ward and featuring scenes of earth, sky, rice fields, plants, and trees, is united by the circle – a universal symbol of integrity, infinity, and eternity. This circularity signifies a departure from time and space, embracing the moment of return and rebirth. Evoking the Zen Buddhist concept of the circle as emptiness and the universe, the artwork, accompanied by a soundscape by Japanese artist Conan Amok, invites mindful viewing and personal immersion within its softly enchanting and transformative environment.
