Module 1

OVERVIEW:

1. (15 mins) Quick syllabus review.
2. (15 mins) Set up a Team website using google sites; you will use this each module.
3. (60 mins) Intro to 3d printing.
4. (60 mins) Initial gadget design.

Step 1: Syllabus review

• Review the syllabus as a team and come up with one question.

Step 2: Setting Up Your Team Website

• Each team member must create a Gmail account if you don’t already have one.
• One member must create a website on google sites with your group name, and give edit permissions to the other group members. An example google site is here.
• E-mail your group's website address to kayat@sacredheart.edu.

Step 3: Intro to 3d printing

• Demo
• Install Makerbot Print on your computer.
• Explore Thingiverse to choose a cool 3d sample. This example should be able to be printed in less than 2 hours.
• Generate an .stl file and send it to kayat@sacredheart.edu

Step 4: Initial gadget design

1. (Individual) Produce 3 design ideas of a gadget that you will eventually create on a 3-D printer. The gadget does not have to be original; it can be a modification of an existing gadget. You may use Thingiverse for ideas. Copyrights are not an issue, but be sure to give the creator credit for their design. Write a quick description for each idea.
2. (Group) Come up with a metric to evaluate your designs, and choose the best one according to your metric. Include information on this evaluative process in your blog.
3. (Individual) Draw a detailed schematic of your design on paper and post a snapshot of it on your blog with an explanation of the gadget’s utility or operation.
4. (Individual) Create a model of the design using modeling clay. Post a YouTube video on your blog about your model that explains its design. Check this quick tutorial if you need help (One of the efficient ways to post a video is to record the video with your phone, upload it to Youtube using your google account, and insert the youtube link to the blog).
