In LIS 759, Digital Libraries, we were asked to create a website for users to interact with a digital collection. I chose to digitize my mother's family childhood birthday photos. In creating the website I strove not only to have high quality images that told a story, but also to house the information in a user friendly format. I ensured there were multiple ways to navigate the site and that there were different ways to understand the chronological order of the photos. This project served as a wonderful teaching tool demonstrating how to create access for information users to resources that had previously been in physical format with limited usability.
In LIS 889, Digital Curation, we were asked to create a mock collection and information management plan that would need to be submitted for funding approval. Being a Sci-Fi fan I knew that the Star Fleet travels the known universe searching out new information; yet the organization does not appear to have any sort of curation plan in place for this new knowledge. Thus, I created a comprehensive plan for how to manage that enormous influx of data. It was an outstanding way to understand the digital information storage needs of a intergalactic organization (or an agency on Planet Earth), while also letting my imagination blossom.
In LIS 750, Information Storage and Retrieval, our first assignment was evaluating the American Library Association's Job List database. Our goal was to understand the structure of the database, what keywords work best, and what fields we would want to include if designing our own job list database. This assignment not only allowed me to discover many of the open librarian positions across the country, but also showcased an excellent database system that I can use as a model in the future.
