Horse Interview: Sharpening Skills Beyond the Barn!

The Sherburne County 4-H Horse Project offers a premier opportunity for youth to excel, not just in riding, but in leadership, communication, and equine knowledge through the highly valued Horse Interview. This unique educational competition emphasizes professional development, requiring members to step into a conference-style setting without their horse, and dress for success in professional attire—complete with a jacket, collared shirt, and often a hat.

The Professional Challenge

The Horse Interview is a rigorous, one-on-one conversation that teaches youth to present themselves as poised and informed individuals.

• Professional Conduct: Members learn the fundamentals of professional interaction, including a firm handshake and clear self-introduction, setting a stage of respect and confidence.

• Demonstrating Mastery: This is where year-long learning is put to the test. Judges lead a discussion to evaluate the member’s deep understanding of their project and general horsemanship, covering:

  • Equine Science: Questions on horse breeds, anatomy (e.g., "Name three parts of a horse?"), health, and care (e.g., "What is colic?").

  • Project Management: Discussion on their project's specifics, why certain choices were made, and required project record books.

  • Critical Reflection: Encouraging self-evaluation by asking about challenges faced, lessons learned, and what they would do differently in the future.

This component of the Sherburne County 4-H Horse Project is designed as a positive learning experience, where the judge acts as a mentor, guiding the 4-H'er to improve their communication skills, self-evaluation, and public speaking. It proves that the most valuable lesson learned in 4-H is the growth and personal development that happens both in and out of the saddle!
