STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
In 2020 (Primary 2), Shavonne started working on the Young Scientist Badge Programme by the Science Centre Singapore (SCS) and managed to complete 15 badges within the year. Her favourite badge work was that of the Young Geologist. The most challenging was that of the Young MR Creator. The most interesting were the Young Geospatial Scientist, the Young Geneticist and the Young IT Whiz. Because of her love for nature and animals, Shavonne also completed the badges for the Young Zoologist, the Young Ornithologist, the Young Marine Biologist, the Young Entomologist and the Young Meteorologist. In line with the whole concern about Sustainability, she also completed the Young Sustainability Champion, the Young Energy Saver, the Young Environmentalist, and the Young Water Ambassador. Her 15th badge was the Young Food Scientist. She was interviewed by SCS for their 'Vodcast for Earth Day' programme on 22 Apr 2020 and for the annual 'Young Scientist Badge Programme Award Ceremony' on 6 Nov 2020. Throughout the year 2020, Shavonne was invited to participate in various programme organized by the SCS. These included the Mixed Reality Creator workshops (22 & 29 Jul 2020), the Sustainability Junior Basic Class (7 Sep 2020), the Untame Athlete Experience (23 Nov 2020), the Makerpreneur Programme (7-8 Dec 2020), and the Serious Gaming Camp (10-11 Dec 2020). Shavonne was also invited to be a panelist for the Nature Society’s first edition of the Young Marine Biologists webinar on 15 Dec 2020 where she shared on the topic of Giant Clams.
In 2021 (Primary 3), Shavonne was invited to participate in the ‘Prototyping and Mentorship Programme’ organised by SCS and sponsored by Temasek Foundation. This programme was held over a period of four weeks which culminated in each team building and presenting a project on the theme of sustainability. Her team presented on Vertical Farming. After a successful run in 2020, Shavonne was invited back to be a panelist for the Nature Society’s second edition of the Young Marine Biologists webinars held on 4 Jul 2021. This time, she was asked to share on two topics: Sea Anemones and Sea Stars. She also participated in events organised by the Nature Society, namely kayaking among the mangrove swamp at Pulau Ubin on 18 Sep 2021, and an Intertidal Walk on Kusu Island on 5 Dec 2021.
In 2022 (Primary 4), the Science Centre Singapore celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Young Scientist Programme on 21 Sep 2022. Shavonne was invited to set up a booth at the event to showcase her projects submitted for the 15 badges. The Guest-of-Honour for the event was the Minister for Education, Mr Chan Chun Sing who highlighted her in his speech and also stopped by her booth to have a chat with her. During the event, she was also interviewed by The Straits Times and the Lianhe Zaobao School Publications. Earlier in the year, Shavonne was chosen to participate in the making of the Young Food Scientist Journey video at the SCS on 5 Mar 2022.
In 2023 (Primary 5), Shavonne was selected to participate in the Ministry of Education’s E2K Science Enrichment Programme and also to take part in the Singapore Primary Science Olympiad Competition organised by NUS High where she obtained a Merit award. She was also chosen to participate in the Singapore Youth Science Festival 2023. Her team put up a booth at the Science Centre Singapore on 28 Jul 2023 to showcase their project.
After taking a break for PSLE in 2024, Shavonne is back to doing Science based projects in 2025 (Secondary 1). She managed to complete the Young Engineer and the Young Mathematician badges in one day, thus bringing her badges to 17. She is also very interested in her school's Maker Education programme, signing up for extra classes on Advanced Carpentry, Advanced Cardboard Construction, Advanced Coding with Microbit and 3D Printing. For her school's Fusion Project, her team represented their class in the Grand Fusion Showcase Finals and won the Audience Choice Award.
Shavonne was exposed to Coding in 2020 using the visual block-based programming tools - Scratch and Tynker. In 2022, she made use of her coding skills in the annual Dr Low Guat Tin Challenge organised by the Girls' Brigade and her team came in Top in "Medium for Invent" category and was also crowned the Overall Challenge Winner. In that same year, as part of the Design Thinking workshops for the Junior Prefects, she again used Coding to design a game to highlight the issue of dirty toilets in the school and how the students can help keep the toilets clean. Towards the second half of the year, the school provided the Applied Learning Programme (ALP) using Lego Spike Prime, building robots around the theme of transportation and discovering the many different types of transportation and the challenges behind them using Design Thinking as a framework. In 2023, the school again provided the ALP, building upon the coding knowledge gained in 2022, the students advanced to more complex coding. Shavonne also participated in the National Robotics Competition 2023 where the theme was 'Green City'. The competition consisted of two parts: presentation and the actual robot run. This year, she started Block & Text Programming through Minecraft and Roblox coding. With all the coding knowledge, Shavonne finally released her first Roblox game in 2024. After PSLE, Shavonne participated in the 2-day "Code for Fun" programme organised by her school, where she learnt about Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Cybersecurity and programmed the Sphero. In 2025, Shavonne was accepted into the Sentinel Programme organised by MINDEF.
In the area of Mathematics, Shavonne attained a Silver in the 2021 Singapore & Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) competition and also managed to proceed onto the second round of the GEP selection test. In 2022, Shavonne was chosen to be in the Ministry of Education’s E2K Mathematics Enrichment Programme for high ability learners as well as her school’s Mathematics Olympiad Programme. In 2023, she was again selected to participate in the Ministry of Education’s E2K Mathematics Enrichment Programme and her school’s Mathematics Olympiad Programme. She also took part in the National Mathematical Olympiad (NMO∑) Competition organised by NUS High and obtained a Bronze award. 2024 is Shavonne's final year in primary school. She was again chosen to be in her school's Mathematics Olympiad Programme and took part in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (SMOPS) organised by Hwa Chong Institution. After PSLE, Shavonne volunteered to be a facilitator for her school's P2 Mathematics Trail, assisting the P2s in completing various Mathematics-related tasks held in a local supermarket.
Shavonne is a nature lover and volunteers with the NParks' Community in Nature (CIN) Biodiversity Watch for the Dragonfly Watch, the Garden Bird Watch, the Butterfly Watch and the Heron Watch.
