Art class is the perfect space for all students to learn through visuals. Students who are still learning English will better understand what their goals are through images and other visuals. I have thought about how to add effective visuals to help my students have better success and better communicate.Â
Knowledge indicator standard 3E states, "understands the appropriate role of technology, including assistive technology, to address student needs, as well as how to incorporate contemporary tools and resources to maximize student learning." Adding visuals and using technology resources is a tremendous help in communicating with students who are still learning English. Students can learn from following along with the example and classmates. The slides and visuals help to give students other ideas so their project does not become the same as my example.
I have learned that using an iPad for Google Translate is frustrating for the student and takes more time. To prevent any frustration or confusion, having visual instructions and examples is beneficial. I have taken more time to purposefully think through the process of demonstrating projects and creating slides. I think about what I can do to help all my students better understand.
A hands-on professional development with an Elim art teacher taught me many different projects and ways to differentiate to allow all students to participate. I got to participate and learn as the students would in individual and group projects. We did projects with a variety of materials, including paint, markers, paper, felt, and more.
This professional development fits perfectly with standard 3P. "Works with others to adapt and modify instruction to meet individual student needs." I got to learn about some projects and ways to differentiate activities. All students will be able to create artwork with a variety of materials with a few simple changes.
As a future art teacher, this experience showed me there is always a way students can participate. There are so many materials and projects students can do. Students are creative and I must find unique ways to capture their creativity.
