The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.
The slides are taken from a variety of classes to show the steps and instructions. Having a slide on the board with written and visual instructions is helpful for students to look back on. Visuals also help when students are learning to read or learning to speak English.
Performance indicator 4J states "creates clear expectations and procedures for communication and behavior and a physical setting conducive to achieving classroom goals." My slides match this performance indicator because they are accessible ways to communicate the goals. Some visuals give examples and others explain the text.
Through teaching a variety of lessons and getting to teach the same lesson multiple times I learned clear steps and instructions, which will lead to less confusion in instructions. The students I have taught love checklists and knowing what they must get done in the class. The checklists are most beneficial at the high school level when students work more independently at their own pace. I also learned that including visuals will help students understand just as well as written instructions.
This slideshow includes photos of the spaces I taught during student teaching at two elementary schools and a high school. Each space is a unique set-up, allowing for movement and access to supplies.Â
Having designated spaces for creating various materials is important to stay organized and help with the flow of the classroom. Performance indicator 4M matches the classroom set-ups. "Organizes, allocates, and manages time, materials, technology, and physical space to provide active and equitable engagement of students in productive learning activities." With a little bit of my input and the experience of my cooperating teachers, we found the best results for classroom set-up. The spaces are organized by materials and make them accessible to students.
I learned a lot about classroom setup in the lower elementary school where I was placed. The carpet provides a space similar to a student's homeroom classroom and is free from supplies and distractions that are out on the tables. The carpet space allows students to listen to instructions without working or playing with supplies.
