Seymour International

Folk Dance Links

International Folk Dance clubs are places where our "village people" teach themselves dances. These are mostly village dances, and it is up to you to figure out how to include yourself. We can use spontaneous spot teaches and reduced speed tracks, but most of your dance will be self-acquired. This is not a dance class. We purposefully select dances that are ones where someone who doesn't know the dance isn't likely to mess up other people in the circle or line as you stumble through learning them. There is also the more graceful option of learning behind the line before joining. We point you to links and music, the means for learning these at home should you feel you want to learn these well enough to be a leader or teacher for the dances we present to you.

Learning new dances by video has advantage and disadvantages. The advantage is you can adjust the speed of these with the Youtube software. The settings for speed are under the gear icon in lower left of screen. Click on the settings gear icon, select your desired speed in the third menu. You can do these in between home chores and errands, and even using your phone in a waiting room or during your bus ride.

The disadvantages are you can't ask questions and sometimes the orientation of the video is not from behind the line, whereas in-person learning, you can see and hear everything more clearly.

We do this for fun, and not for scholarship. There will be style differences for all leaders! There is always room for individual expression in recreational dance. This is also not a performance. You are responsible for your own learning and keeping up with others. Below are links to the youtube playlists. These are not publicly searchable, but are "unlisted" access links. Let us know if you are having any problems using these.
