A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.
We acknowledge that Gardens of Golden Gate Park sits on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone who are the original peoples of the San Francisco Peninsula. We recognize that we benefit from living and working on their traditional homeland, and we affirm their sovereign rights as first peoples.
Dedicated to connecting people to plants, the planet, and each other, the Gardens uphold the significance of this cherished and revered place that celebrates Earth’s biological diversity in supporting the health and wellbeing of all people and the planet.
At the Gardens of Golden Gate Park we value the diversity of our volunteer community, welcoming and encouraging volunteers from different backgrounds and experiences, including race, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality, individuals with disabilities, cultural interests, ages, marital status, educational backgrounds, and religious beliefs.
We believe that having a diverse volunteer community is essential to meeting our mission to "connect people to plants, the planet, and each other". Volunteer diversity brings skill variety to our programs, helps us understand and respond to community needs, and provides opportunities for deeper engagement with the diversity of Garden visitors.
To create an inclusive environment, we seek to offer a variety of opportunities with high and low levels of commitment, dates and times which volunteers may participate, and required skills and training. We emphasize the value of volunteer diversity at all levels of the organization, including the Board of Directors. Finally, we commit to providing training and resources in order to support and foster a more inclusive volunteer environment.
