Clearly, change needs to happen.
We demand better from the administration.
Below are the actions we demand the university take in order to better our university now and in the future.
Students and Professors should be given the option to vote democratically over whether they would like to be in-person, remote, or blended. This decision should not be up to the Provost. Students should also be allowed to switch fully online at any point throughout the semester. We demand that this new system be implemented along with the immediate removal of the deadline for in person opt-outs.
In the future, we want an NAU that is always already flexible enough and democratic enough to accommodate the wishes of faculty members and the student body.
NAU has been giving the public the bare minimum in terms of transparency. We would like to know exactly where COVID-19 cases are: dorms, classes, et cetera (without giving away the identity of the student). The President should not be the only one who knows the full details. We would also like daily updates on cases on and off campus. A single number does not cut it. We also demand transparency about what NAU is doing to effectively fight the virus, including what it is doing to provide things like adequate PPE.
In the future, we want an NAU which values transparency of information more than it values a facade of excellence.
We cannot allow COVID students to be "isolated" in the same building as healthy students. This is not isolation, it is negligence. We demand that isolation spaces truly be isolated in order to contain the spread of this virus which has already killed over 200,000 Americans.
In the future, we want an NAU which can take right and adequate measures to safeguard the well-being and health of its community.
COVID-19 policies are in the student code of conduct, along with the drugs and alcohol protocols. Let's be honest, when does a college student read or abide by the student code of conduct? We demand clear and consistent messaging on COVID policies. Students need to know exactly how NAU is going to enforce its policies. Due to students not being fully aware of NAU's policies, NAU has also been incredibly punitive, taking drastic measures to punish people without sufficient warnings.
In the future, we want an NAU which does not make students jump through hoops to find life-saving information. We want an NAU which values its students more than it values bureaucratic bloat and student money. And we want an NAU which can be compassionate towards not only the student body, but the faculty and Flagstaff community as well.
Moving students out of their living arrangements near midterms with only a $300 compensation in NAU credit is morally wrong. NAU admin promised off-campus overflow. We demand that this be the case. No more relocating students for failed efforts from the administration.
In the future, we want an NAU that communicates its plans to the student body effectively, and an NAU that can provide adequate reparations for those it has wronged.
If students are not using parking due to being remote, they should be able to get a refund. Students should also be able to break leases if they do not feel safe. Recreation fees for a building that is not being used should also be refunded.
In the future, we want an NAU which can be flexible enough to do the right thing to keep its students safe.
Students would like to know exactly where their money is going. We demand a list of exactly where expenses are being used.
In the future, we want an NAU that can tell us where our money is going, and that can be accountable and responsible enough to be transparent.
NAU is already overpopulated. This is further gentrifying Flagstaff and raising the housing markets to extreme levels. NAU cannot grow forever. We demand a cap on enrollment so that we can preserve the student to faculty ratio that NAU is known for and preserve the community of Flagstaff.
In the future, we want an NAU which can exist harmoniously with the Flagstaff community, something that cannot happen with the current administration in power.
