Requirements:
20-hours of service, over a minimum of 2 separate service trips in an academic year
TWO reflection discussions - OR - TWO reflection papers submitted to your professor
All student must turn in the above forms PRIOR to beginning service learning

Begin by watching the student orientation to understand why CCBC's ASL and Interpreting programs require service learning.
Reflection discussions allow you to think critically about your service experience while connecting it to the themes of language and culture of the Deaf community. Through whole group guided reflection, students learn from one another's experiences, taking away insights to use in future service opportunities and interactions with the Deaf community.
Students who participate in reflection discussions must have a NEW service experience prior to attending each session.

Students who choose to write a reflection paper should submit it their professor.
The reflection questions are as follows:
Subjective Component – The experiential dimensions of service learning.
Discuss all questions in each reflection:
What were your expectations or feelings regarding the experience before you began?
What were your expectations for the coordinator/organization before you went to the site (consider the environment and your interactions with those you would work and those you would serve)?
What were your feelings while you were there (virtual or physical)?
What services did you perform? Were you working with other volunteers? Expand on your duties.
What were your observations of the service learning experience afterwards? (How did things go for you, how did the day end up, how did you feel after, if this was your 2nd or 3rd visit, how as the experience the same or different from previous engagements?)
Objective Component – The cognitive dimensions of service learning.
Discuss both #1 and #2 below in each reflection, and choose one additional concept as a part of your service learning experience:

--REQUIRED-- Accountability and Responsibility: responsiveness, confidentiality;
Professional Demeanor: teaching and learning culture, modeling professional behavior, clear open and respectful communication;
Feedback and Performance Elements: ASL and English skills, engagement, cooperation; professional engagement - timeliness, follow through, thoroughness;
Hearing Privilege Awareness: Deaf norms, sign-only space, and language preference accommodation.
