Construction of the station began on 1 July 2008. The plan included a park and ride with 650 spaces, a bus interchange, bicycle lockers and a pick up and drop off areas. The line was due to open on 23 January 2011 with no train services due to scheduled maintenance works on the Ipswich line however it was brought forward to 17 January 2011 to assist the recovery efforts of the 2011 Queensland floods. On 2 December 2013, the line was extended to Springfield Central station.
Richlands is named after the homonymous suburb of Richlands which was named after the estate.
Richlands station has two platforms consisting of an island platform. Platform 1 is for outbound services and platform 2 is for inbound services.
Richlands station has only one station entrance which is the walkway to the carpark.
Richlands station does have disability access.
There is a bus interchange outside the station serving nearby suburbs. The routes that serve Richlands are routes 101, 460 and N100.
