Lawnton station opened in 1888 which the land was acquired from Stephen Lawn who was a blacksmith and one of the earlier settlers. The station was named after him and the suburb was named after the station. In 2001 a third platform was constructed with the upgrade to the line from Bald Hills to just north of the station.
The station itself consists of a side platform for platform one and an island platform for platforms two and three. All city services depart from platform one. Kippa-Ring services depart from platform 3 with some peak services departing from platform 2.
Lawnton station has two entry and exit points. One is on the western side of the station on Ebert Parade and the other on the eastern side of the station on Station Road. Both Ebert Parade and Station Road intersect Todds Road which crosses the road via a level crossing slightly south of the station.
Lawnton station does have disability access.
There is a bus stop outside the station on the Ebert Parade side serving nearby suburbs. The routes that serve Lawnton station are 669 and 674.
