About the book: Students are working so hard towards becoming part of the average. What if we stopped trying to make them average? What if we helped them to shine in the areas that were their strengths? How would their educational experience change to support their own personal growth? This is the birthplace of the book. A child that wanted to talk about the stars and dance to their own tune. Instead of changing to fit into the box of school they stayed true to themself.
About the Author: Lindsey was born a storyteller collecting ideas as she romped around her neighborhood with friends. Early on she felt a deep connection to the world around her. She knew she was part of something much bigger and loved recording those noticings as they popped up in her adventures. Her teaching career began 16 years ago at a special education preschool in the Bronx. After her adventures in the city she moved to Vermont and taught EAL. She has been a Learning Support teacher in Maui, Tanzania, Jordan, and most recently Vietnam at UNIS - Hanoi.
SENIA: It was a great opportunity to co-chair the SENIA board in Vietnam. During its first three years, I was able to see all that was being done in the country to accommodate and diversify for students that learned differently. At the same time it was evident that more support was needed in the community and that was our mission, to continue to connect parents, teachers, and students with the resources they were looking for to support one another and themselves. We also were highlighting that learning differently isn't an obstacle to be overcome but an opportunity. An opportunity for the individual to show off their own strengths and superpowers and for others to acknowledge that although it may be 'different' from what they expected there is a brilliant light to be shared. This inspired me to write this children's book - to honor the light in all of us.
