Welcome!
This website has been created by the Self-Determination Warriors for the Visually Impaired.
The aim of our website is to provide adults, mainly caregivers, and educators, easily accessible information on how to increase self-determination in children with visual impairments.
Each page goes into further detail of the areas related to self-determination. Additionally, goals, activities, and a brief explanation of each area will be included on each page.
Self-Determination can be broadly defined as having the skills and opportunities to steer one's life in a way that is personally satisfying. This concept is essential to develop in children with visual impairments to allow them the ability to independently act in their life.
Several concepts make up self-determination:
Assertive communication
The ability to make informed choices
Problem-solving and goal-setting
Self-awareness of individual rights
Self-knowledge
Self-regulation
Self-advocacy and empowerment
