Note compilation of the Selaiki practice of glutomancy. Including known methods and hypothetical rituals done based on recovered historical sites and records.
Glutomancy is a topic that is under fierce debate in SHS research. While scattered records have been found interpretation and understanding is lacking, or if the practices even work to begin with. However, these accounts of magic and witchcraft are an essential aspect to understanding Selaiki people as a culture. To better prepare those for discussion on the topic this article is to help give a simple understanding of the main forms of glutomancy as well as some reasonings on why they were used along with some hypothetical rituals based on recovered items of Selaikic history. The word Glutomancy was constructed due to the fact most rituals done by the Selaikic people focused on their prodigious behinds either as a casting element or as the intended target. Glutomancy has applications in Selaikic culture as varied as the members of their old societies with the main ones known being divination, sub-transfiguration, spirit comune, hypnotism, and Astrology. These magics allowed them to supposedly see the future, bring forth the departed, inluence themselves and others, and much more. These branches will be explored below.
Being mostly a nomadic people with heavy ties to trade and commerce. It pays to know what roads to take and if disasters or fortunes are in your future. As such it is believed that this is not only why divination was one of the most used but also the most recorded practices in Glutomancy between even sites and recorded prophecies. Because of this, we were able to determine some trends among divination attempts. Most accounts featured two things: ritualistic objects and a heavy emphasis on the phases of the moon.
In the accounts, ritualistic objects determined the intricacy and subject matter of the divination. As the prophecies became larger so too were the relics that were recovered. With certain objects being used based on the ‘energies’ they were trying to invoke. Divination about agriculture for small farms might include a simple wooden staff inscribed with a script about nature. Meanwhile, larger prophecies might require a ritualistic altar and golden sticks to interpret. As for the moon's phase, the ritual's time denoted the divination ritual's importance. It is believed that a full moon is only available for powerful Selaikic witches and priestesses as they could handle such magical potency without falling to lunacy outright.
Based on findings from a discovered glutomancy ritual site the following is a supposed ritual that may have been performed there. A divination spell meant to foretell any oncoming ecological disasters. Three Selaikic witches would come together at the altar during the full moon. One would be the interpreter while the remaining two would be the ‘jugglers’. The jugglers would take golden rods, rectangular sticks the size of an average man's forearm painted denoting various script words, letters, and meanings. These rods would be taken by the jugglers and they would begin to bounce the ritual objects between their behinds as the interpreter would chant sacred rites. Once those were complete the other two glutomancers would stop, allowing the rods to fall to the ground. Then the interpreter would come back to the altar where the relics lay and begin ascertaining their prophetic meanings for any and all who had come to the ritual.
Having a large behind is a status symbol within Selaikic culture. As such many tales of glutomancy include the ability of sub-transiguration, the ability to transform parts of themselves, usually their posteriors. The stories that we could translate that involved the use of sub-transfiguration showed the use of predominantly a combination of spices as well as magical sigils and runes across the caster and the intended target. The herbs were consumed whole or even ground to a paste and written onto the body as magic sigils where the contents would be absorbed via the skin, it is actually believed that this is a rudimentary form of alchemy employed to affect the body. Then the sigils were painted across the caster’s body as well as the intended target with the most important ones being those painted on the Selaiki’s bottom itself. These would focus the energies that were conjured honing them to the desired effect. Many a tale showed that if one wasn’t careful and precise with these practices lunacy would most likely occur. These spells would cause a variety of effects that could increase, decrease and even change attributes about themselves with the most drastic changes being that of one's own behinds as that’s where the largest and most important writings would be.
This ritual is based on a story kept in oral tradition. After being translated it was discovered that it may have had its roots in Selaikic magic practices. The lover’s seat is a method of sub transiguration designed to foster ease of companionship between a Selaiki woman and her husband. Approaching a practitioner of the glutomancy arts, they begin the ceremony. Both laid out on beds, the witch would prepare two concoctions for the couple. The Selaiki would have their concoction transcribed with sigils and runes across her body. Meanwhile her husband would ingest his. Once both are completed the husband would be placed atop his wife’s posterior but not rest. For an undisclosed time both are meant to meditate in this position once completed supposedly their souls or energies were intertwined and as a result both would be altered in subtle way. The Selaiki’s shelf would suit her husband’s preferences. He would ind that her shelf would be softer, irmer or even a new quirk to it that he’d ind attractive. Meanwhile the husband’s body would be stronger more resilient and supposedly would make intimacy safer for the two; how so is unclear. Granted, the story this spell is based on did end with Selaiki falling to lunacy and accidentally ending her husband so take this with a grain of salt.
As highly spiritual people, practitioners of glutomancy had an interest in spirits both in understanding the afterlife and in finding old, nearly forgotten knowledge. Out of all the main practices the art of spirit communion is the least known but there are still some trends that were discovered. The few records discovered of this practice revolve around ritualistic dancing as well as objects of desire for the intended spirit. To bring forth the departed burning incense as a token to the dead to call forth an aspect of them to the material plane. Once the offering was accepted, little was found about what this meant, the caster would dance. A couple of theories are present but the one most agreed upon is the idea of harmonization. The dances were a way to harmonize the energies of the living with the dead in order to make crossing much easier or be able to interpret the spirit more quickly. Once completed the dancer would then either be given a vision, an apparition would appear, or they’d be a medium and the spirit would be able to communicate through them to.
Based on an ancient stone tablets depicting what some currently believe is a glutomancy ritual described below. Ancestry's smoke trail, burns not only incense but also a token of sentimental value towards the dearly departed. After the ire has started the incense creates smoke and begins dancing. Supposedly the one they are trying to contact would possess the smoke as it twirled around the witch and materialize as a spirit. While in this state the smoke would ‘talk’ showing images or words or even interact with the dancer as the ritual continued until the caster couldn't willingly or not.
Hypnosis, in regard to glutomancy, entails the use of ritual dancing and incantation to affect the minds of would-be onlookers. Those who watched these dances would have their eyes naturally drawn to the glutomancers ever moving behind unable to look away. Unable to focus on anything else and fall into a hyper-focused but also relaxed trance-like state. The incantation works to both facilitate this trance inducement as well as implanting suggestions in the target's mind. This would change the target’s behavior during and potentially after the spell had been completed. This could entail many things such as for interrogation, or even instilling a berzerk rage into an army before the battle.
Given the Selaikic people’s reputation amongst other nations this is one of the most well known forms of their unique magical practices though it was meant to be depicted as a fear tactic to keep the populace apprehensive and suspicious of the Selaikic people. The dificulty comes from ascertaining what were true stories or greatly exaggerated propaganda. It is believed most practitioners of this branch would at best be able to cause minor suggestions and triggers in other people through their admittedly provocative entrancement. While more knowledgeable casters could inluence more people at once or could exert more inluence over speciic individuals. Rarely does this ever get to the level of full mind control that other nations painted glutomancers as but there are a few stories that may point to such possibilities.
This comes from a supposed figure in history, a Selaiki witch that was well known for her use of this particular branch of Glutomancy. While it is possible that this person was fabricated as a fear-mongering ploy, there are some recovered Selaikic stories that point to her being a true member of Selaikic civilization. Regardless, glittering gold is in regard to her particular regalia. Using a dress that involved many golden coins, as she danced and chanted her dress would sparkle and clatter which would distract her intended target even more than a basic glutomancer hypnotism. While performing she would whisper incantations in between promises of riches and wealth as a way to mask her magic and also tug at her target's natural desires. Once completed she would then be able to use the clink of 2 coins to put them under her thrall as many times as she wanted within an undisclosed time. It is believed that some of these were an explanation for hidden spies for the eye of the eclipse but that is still has little backing.
Those who studied Astronomy glutomancy understand the interconnectedness of all things. From the planets to the stars and of course to one’s own backside. This practice focuses on the understanding of the energies surrounding the glutomancer via observation of stars and celestial bodies(and of course the lunar cycle). Though not necessarily powerful mystics they more than make up with it in versatility. Being able to use multiple smaller effects based on the celestial alignments. As such they can technically use all other glutomancy practices to a limited degree and combine them in ways that can enhance their abilities. Such as sub transiguration which makes one’s backside move in a way that causes their hypnosis spell to be much more effective or divination to tell that one area is better for communicating with spirits over another. However, this versatility comes with its own drawbacks. As they are far more reliant on the timing than any other in regards to the cosmos. Along with this above all others, astronomy glutomancers are the most susceptible to lunacy. As the multiple effects have a cumulative impact on the casters mind wearing it down until their magic takes over them and not the other way around.
This particular one is purely hypothetical as little could be ascertained in astronomy. Nature’s bounty is a proposed event before a harvest season for agricultural-based towns and cities. It takes place during the new moon before harvest to symbolize new fruition and renewal of energy. The glutomancer would then have a group of assistants paint sigils across her arms and legs and then amongst themselves. After which she’d take a ritual staff that is meant to harmonize with the energies of nature and begin a group performance that involves sculpting, pottery, incense, and ‘giving back to the land’. Once finished it would bring about a good crop in the upcoming harvest.
While using consumable items is prevalent in a number of Glutomancy branches the concept of essential oils is different. The use of oils comes sporadically across many different stories that involve glutomancy in its many forms. Currently, there are no trends to speak of between their use and the different types of mysticism. The use of such materials is under scrutiny with the most believed hypothesis being a form of ritual enhancer. While not necessary for any particular glutomancy success there could be an association with the oil and making success more likely as has been observed in Selaikic communities. Before casting a Glutomancer would apply these oils to themselves and others who would take part. This action would either be shown as a sign of good luck or magical enhancement causing their arts to more likely succeed or even make the rituals more powerful upon completion.
The above ive are the major glutomancy practices that could be discovered when collecting information on Selaikic culture. Each has multiple records taken from varying sources including documentation, ritual sites, and oral tradition passed down from descendants of those who had been part of the rituals. Few and far between are tales of Selaiki witches with powers that even surpass the magic described here. While most has been described as hearsay there is a correlation between the few accounts that cannot be ignored. Stories of powerful Selaiki witches who could not only commune with spirits but return them to the physical world. Controlling the energies of nature itself with a mere twirl of their hips. Duplication, illusions, nightmare inducement. One even told of a supposed ritual performed under an alignment of the solar system's planets that would coincide with the ascension of a demi-god. The details were not clear but there was some connection to either the start or end of a war with a rival nation because of this.
und them and being influenced in turn. This is why the study of glutomancy is important. Understanding the practice tells us many things of both the Selaiki culture but also their influence of other places as well.
As has been mentioned previously in this article. Lunacy is a consequence of Glutomancy amongst the casters and some of the targets. Those who were untrained or had done the rituals incorrectly would lose control of the magical energies. These would overwhelm the people causing their behinds to expand rapidly, even for sub-transiguration standards, and develop an obsession with growing as well as the moon. In most records, these are nearly universally considered a negative and should be avoided despite the Selaiki culture's reverence to the behind as a cultural symbol. This shows that while their cultural symbol is something to strive for, the cultural philosophy had a higher emphasis on control and sustainability. Considering that Selaiki groups were some of the first to instill laws for population control it makes sense that these would be emphasized and why they would disparage lunacy.
In conclusion, the topic of glutomancy is at its heart a topic of Selaikic culture. The mysticism, the stories, the relics, and the ritual sites show many sides of Selaikic culture and those they have interacted with. Their ability to conduct alchemy. Their desire to chart the stars. Understanding both body and mind emphasizes a factor of Selaiki culture and philosophy. However, it doesn’t just deal with the Selaiki but also others. While rare and esoteric, glutomancy was part of their culture. As the selaikic people interacted with others they learned of their practices. Influencing those around them and being influenced in turn. This is why the study of glutomancy is important. Understanding the practice tells us many things about both the Selaiki culture and also their influence on other places as well.
