The most important thing when choosing a lab is to actually visit the lab you are interested in and find out what they are doing and what the atmosphere is like. Most students probably get their information from the website first, but it often happens that after entering the lab, they find that it is not what they first imagined.
Therefore, I recommend that you do as much preliminary research as possible. Also, it is especially important to talk not only with the teachers, but also with the students when you visit. By doing so, you can get important information that you really want to know, such as the actual atmosphere of the laboratory and the advantages and disadvantages, which you cannot get from just talking to the professor. So when you come to visit our laboratory, please take the time to talk with the students.
What kind of human resources will be required by society in the future? Looking back on the past, from the post-war period until the bursting of the bubble economy, emphasis was placed on the ability to complete a given task quickly and accurately. After that, the ability to discover issues and find solutions to them came to be required. In the future, it is believed that the ability to find the most important issues (top issues) out of the various large and small issues that exist will be required.
The same can be said for research. In the field of earth science, there are a variety of issues, from small ones to important issues that form the center of the field. You can hone your problem-solving skills by choosing small issues. However, solving small issues will not lead to breakthroughs or other major changes, and will hardly attract any attention. This is the same in business.
In this laboratory, we ask ourselves what is the most important question? Is that really the issue that needs to be addressed? In this laboratory, we train students to find the top issues by starting from the point of "What is the most important question? I believe that this will be a powerful weapon for you whether you go on to a doctoral course or find a job.

Research themes for graduate students will be decided in consultation with the students.
You can study climate change on various time scales (decades to hundreds of thousands of years scale). As the marine sediment core records global climate change, it is recommended for students who want to investigate the mechanism of global climate change. It is also recommended for students who are interested in ocean cruise.
From lake/peat sediments, you can study climate change mainly on the decade to tens of thousands years scale. Because lake/peat sediment reflects local land climate change, it is recommended for students who are interested in regional climate change. It is also recommended for students who are interested in land fieldwork.
From ice core, you can study climate change on the scale of ten to tens of thousands years. Information on past atmospheric environment can be obtained from ice core. It is recommended for students interested in relation between aerosol and climate. You may have opportunities to join fieldwork in Greenland, Antarctica and mountain glaciers.
