I found CK-12.org as a resource for you and your student as it offers free textbooks and simulations. It is immensely difficult to go through a lab without knowing the Scientific Method, and cannot be done as safely as possible without understanding proper Safety precautions. Science Goals and Ways of Thinking was to help your student become familiar with how a scientist would think and go about a problem by using scientific method. Your student can read the content that is related to assignments to be more prepared for class; however if you keep reading you will read until the end of the book. I provide the readings as a reference, however, CK-12 will label them as separate assignments from the practice questions. Should you or your student still want to view these resources, they can be found under the Shared Resources or Library tabs on the site. CK-12 does not allow me to assign an assignment to one student only, which means for the students that want extra work I’d have to assign it to all. I will label them as extra work, so it will be clear it is not a required assignment. Plix simulation assignments are a visual way to represent things that you can’t see or can’t physically do due to material restraints. There may be challenge questions on the simulation, but it will be instructed BEFORE entering the simulation. PhET Colorado is the other simulation site we will use. They have lesson plans with their simulations, but you won’t need to do any for homework, those will be in class lessons. Simulations are great for following the 5 E’s. We will do simulation investigations in class, so students DO need to have their username and password for ck-12.org in their science notebooks. CK-12 does have an app that is reportedly easier to use than the website. I have received positive feedback from quite a few students that the site was helpful and fun.
