Mrs. Sherer was sick Monday-Tuesday Here was the plan. Forensics did their exit escape rooms. Robotics 1 worked on their kits.
3rd Hour Lesson Plan
They have been doing a long experiment involving elephant toothpaste using different catalysts. Tell them I don’t want them experimenting with the 35% Hydrogen Peroxide today. Instead I want them to grab their ipad and rewatch each video and do a compare and contrast on Sodium Iodide, Potassium iodide, and yeast. When they finish that I want them to make sure everyone’s lab report has a complete set of collect data.
Next they are supposed to set up in their notebook a new experiment with elephant toothpaste changing the independent variable. They can write down their set up but can’t conduct it until next week.
I want them to then research on elephant toothpaste and devil’s toothpaste. They can do this by reading or watching youtube videos on the experiments. I want them to answer any questions they have about the experiments, and answer “so what’s happening?” “what causes the reaction”
Does this research change the experiment you want to conduct?
This should take the whole period. If it doesn’t, have them do this
Then watch this video The sci guys elephant toothpaste.
Have them write in their notebooks what a catalyst is, stop the video with the definition displayed. Finish watching video unstopped. Then I want you to go back in the video to the molecules breakdown at 3:30. I now want students to draw the molecule hydrogen peroxide —> turning to the molecules water and oxygen gas

4th Hour Lesson Plan
Watch Mark Rober World’s Largest Elephant Toothpaste experiment
Pause the video at 6 minutes before the reaction happens and ask the kids if they think it’s going to work, why or why not?
Then play
Then watch this video The sci guys elephant toothpaste.
Have them write in their notebooks what a catalyst is, stop the video with the definition displayed. Finish watching video unstopped. Then I want you to go back in the video to the molecules breakdown at 3:30. I now want students to draw the molecule hydrogen peroxide —> turning to the molecules water and oxygen gas

Next they are supposed to set up in their notebook a new experiment with elephant toothpaste changing the independent variable. They can write down their set up but can’t conduct it until next week.
If perhaps there is extra time, show them this simulation, and as the class tells you what to do, do it on the screen. Follow their instructions exactly even if you know they are incorrect. Do, sandwich, molecules, then game if time. https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/reactants-products-and-leftovers/latest/reactants-products-and-leftovers_all.html

5th Hour Lesson Plan
Watch this video on why the US has so many tornados compared to the rest of the world.
Option 1: Continue tornado house projects. The handouts are to the left of the mini fridge in the top slot or on the tray above the printer. I printed new budgets, pass out their packets. Point out they may buy hot glue for the whole project for $1. If they show you a complete drawing and a budget sheet filled out they can play find and seek in the room for the materials (or ask art room), then they may start building. They cannot go over their $10 budget not even $10.10. Set the projects anywhere they will fit. If they finish before class is up they can grab an ipad and research how people in the real world engineer tornado proof buildings.
Option 2:
Watch this video on 8 types of tornado
Then play tornado jeopardy and see how much we know and don’t. It’s important to go over the answers as there is so much we don’t know! Feel free to google things that they don’t know and show them!

Forensics: We will do blood typing the week after break. We are going to look at our super glue fingerprints and try to match them back to their owner using the fingerprint page we did with ink in our notebook. Once they are all matched tape yours into your notebook. Then watch this video and then try dusting random objects in the class with paint brushes and corn starch. Must clean up mess from this. How hard was this activity?
Chemistry: Continue their Chosen Experiment by setting up an effective lab report, prepping materials, then running the lab at least 3 times.
Monday: bubbles
Tuesday: Bucket fog rings
Wednesday: Launch potatoes
Physical Science: Continuing our learning on density. From the rolling cart each student will need a plastic test tube and write their name on it with permanent marker. Then have the students pull up the list of liquids they compared densities on last week. Ask them which liquid should go first in our tube. some liquids are clear. We can add food coloring to make them visible. The heaviest we have is honey. Lightest is rubbing alcohol. Fill tube with the different liquids then close the tubes.
Meteorology: Watch this video to learn how ozone is made in the atmosphere. Then Model Ozone creation in the atmosphere with marshmallows and wood sticks. This lab is in the weather & Climate Science lab for kids.

Show this video https://youtu.be/SYsflJxCbQg? feature=shared ask them if they want to sing along now. Usually, they say no lol you'll need to explain that D=M/V means density is the calculated objects mass divided by it's volume. We then took notes in our notebook, which are in Physical Science Notes on our new vocab words mass, weight, volume, density. Then we too a guess on about 10 different liquids and which we think are more or less dense and finally put them in order.
Meteorology: We reviewed fronts, then did this experiment watched this video because we can't create it in class. Next we created as many fronts in the simulation that we could create
Robotics 2: Finish Codefinity to move on to soldering

Chemistry: Built Hydrogen and Oxygen gas, water, and Carbon dioxide out of molecular set on periodic table battleship boards. Discussed turning the models into bigger sizes using ping pong balls. Showed Phet Simulations that they could use for a variety of classes. I want them to use the Build a Molecule simulation, which shows how a molecule should look and its bond structure by clicking 3D. Fill this out -- emailed to office https://phet.colorado.edu/files/activities/3448/file-preview_5914.pdf#toolbar=0&navpanes=0&statusbar=0&messages=0
