Teaching Practice
Teaching at Kinder Courage Class
The learning procedure in Kindergarten lasts for 3 hours, with several diverse activities. The lesson begins with the Dominican Blessing. Then the students are invited to do circle time, where all students are invited to gather energy before starting the lesson by singing and dancing together. After that, the teacher will explain the learning material of the day, with some activities determined together with the students. Once finished, they have time to eat their lunch brought from home. They also have quiet time or sleeping time, where all students are asked to be quiet and sleep while waiting for the angelus prayer. After the angelus prayer, they will continue learning again until they go home.
According to my own experience when teaching one of the subjects in kindergarten, I started by giving greetings to the students. After that I would ask the students' readiness to start learning mathematics that day. I also gave some rules during my teaching, and I said that if the students followed the rules I made, then I would give rewards at the end of the lesson in the form of souvenirs from Indonesia.
In starting the lesson, I invite the students to do a little warm-up by doing movements and songs together. After that I play a video about the material I will discuss, namely ordinal numbers. After watching the video, I do a brief review of the content of the video. After that I invite the students to do mini games about ordinal numbers. I ask them, is there anyone who wants to volunteer to come forward in front of the class? I will reward the students who want to be active in class with stamps. The more stamps they get, the better they are active in the class. After finishing the mini games, I give them bingo cards to check if they have understood the material.
Learning on that day went smoothly, although there were one or two students who were less active in class. Sometimes there are still some students who cannot stay still in the classroom, so I have to attract their attention with some keywords that they certainly understand. For example, when I want them to pay attention to me, I will say “eyes on me” and they will answer “eyes on you”, when I say “ears on me” and they will also answer “ears on you”. After saying these keywords, the students will pay attention and listen to the explanation I am giving. Another keyword that I usually say when they are busy is “waterfalls”, and they will answer with the sound of a waterfalls like “sssssttt”, after which the students will be silent. Some keywords like that are indeed needed to manage the class so that everything can run well.
