In accordance with the objectives conveyed by SEAMEO SEA Teacher for this SEA Teacher program, which include:
To enable pre-service student teachers to develop their teaching skills and pedagogy.
To encourage pre-service student teachers to practice their English skills.
To allow pre-service student teachers to gain a broader regional and world view.
To expose future teachers to diverse teaching and learning situations and opportunities, and the value of flexibility.
The practicum procedure we received at USANT includes:
Week 1 : Introduction to the school environment, observation and orientation.
Week 2 : Meetings with the co-operating teacher, followed by classroom observations and lesson plan preparation.
Week 3 : Practice teaching and reflection from co-operating teachers. Also because this is the last week, a farewell party is held.
The outcomes of my practicum experience were as follows:
Gaining a deeper understanding of the education system in the Philippines.
Practicing teaching using English, which enhanced my communication skills.
Expanding my knowledge of both teaching methods and subject matter.
Engaging in cultural exchange by sharing and learning from different traditions.
Boosting my confidence and improving my public speaking skills.
During the SEA TEACHER program, I encountered several challenges.
The first challenge was the language barrier. English is a foreign language for me, and I had never used it as a primary medium of instruction before. However, in the Philippines, English is widely spoken, especially in education. This made me quite nervous about my speaking skills—I was unsure whether the students and teachers would understand me clearly.
The next challenge was food. As a Muslim traveling to a predominantly Catholic and Christian country, I struggled to find halal food and a mosque for prayer. It required extra effort to ensure that the food I consumed met my dietary requirements.
Lastly, cultural differences posed another challenge. The way of life, customs, and traditions in the Philippines were quite different from those in my home country. However, I embraced these differences and enjoyed experiencing their culture. I found it fascinating and enriching, making my stay even more memorable.
Participating in the SEA TEACHER program was an unforgettable and enriching experience. It provided me with the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally while immersing myself in a new educational and cultural environment.
Academically, this program allowed me to practice and enhance my teaching skills in an international setting. Teaching in English was a challenge at first, but it ultimately boosted my confidence and communication abilities. I also gained a deeper understanding of the Philippine education system, classroom management strategies, and effective teaching methodologies that I can apply in my future career.
Culturally, the experience was eye-opening. I had the chance to engage with local students, teachers, and the community, which helped me appreciate the differences and similarities between my home country and the Philippines. Despite initial challenges such as adapting to the new environment, language barriers, and finding halal food, I learned to navigate these difficulties and embrace the experience with an open mind.
Overall, the SEA TEACHER program was an incredible journey that not only strengthened my teaching skills but also broadened my perspective on global education and cultural exchange. It was a valuable experience that I will always cherish, and I am grateful for the friendships, lessons, and memories I gained throughout the program.
At this moment, I do not have any suggestions for improvement because I believe the SEA TEACHER program is already well-structured and highly effective. The program provides an incredible opportunity for student-teachers to develop their teaching skills, experience different education systems, and engage in cultural exchange.
Everything—from the teaching practicum, mentoring support, and cultural immersion—was well-organized, making the experience truly valuable. I am grateful for the chance to be part of this program, and I highly recommend it to future participants who wish to grow as educators and global citizens.
