There are currently 39 high schools in San Diego County offering the CIF approved sport of Girls’ Beach Volleyball at both the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. Only 13 of these schools have facilities on campus or off the beach to train at so there is a need for reserved court space at our local beaches.
We would like to work with the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department to secure beach volleyball court space for our local high schools who do not have courts on their respective campuses.
Create a set schedule of reserved court times at both South Mission Beach Sports Park and Ocean Beach Sand courts to allow for uninterrupted practices and games for schools that do not have courts on campus.
Alert the community through social media and signage on poles at the beach of said schedule to mitigate any potential problems.
We propose that low cost or no cost permits are made available on Mondays - Thursdays at both South Mission Beach Volleyball Courts and Ocean Beach Volleyball Courts between the hours of 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm during the designated High School Spring Beach Season, (Typically February 15th through April 25th) to allow for use by local high schools who would like to run practices or host games. In addition to that, La Jolla High School would like to request a one day Saturday permit to host a city wide tournament where multiple schools can all compete in one location. Date TBD each season.
In 2022, the California Interscholastic Federation approved Girls’ Beach Volleyball as an approved CIF sport thus furthering the growth of the sport for the youth in our community and across the state. In 2024, there are currently 39 schools offering both JV and varsity teams yet only 13 schools have courts on campus or have access to local churches, parks, or training centers with courts. The list of schools affected in the South Mission/Ocean Beach areas are La Jolla, Pt. Loma, The Rock Academy, Our Lady of Peace, and Francis Parker. We have always done our best to play most matches at the schools with courts on campus so as to minimize our time at the local beaches and keep the peace with everyone, but we would greatly appreciate a reserved place to hold our practices and games when needed during this short 10 week season that is not during peak hours at either location. Our goal is to create this agreement with SD Parks and Rec moving forward into the 2025 season. THANK YOU for your time!!!
