This is a table of run data that was collected starting on April 25th 2023. The runs tracked are only from B Division days. B Division days are 24 hour periods that start at 0700 (instead of the normally scheduled 0800). This data was collected in an attempt to understand how run volume in particular districts can influence neighboring districts. It is also collected with a particular perspective since I was operating at 11/B in the Firefighter position during this time. Specifically in question was the percentage of calls that Station 11 units run in the districts of Station 4 and Station 7.
Qualifiers for information gathered were as follows.
Date of the Call
Unit running the Call
Disposition of the Call (Medical, Traffic Accident, Rescue, Structure or Other)
Qualifiers for the Disposition (i.e. Commercial vs. Residential Structure, etc.)
District of the Call's location
If the Call is in the Station 11 Unit's normal dispatch area (according to the response matrix used)
The Data that was collected is listed below. A summary is provided, individual data pieces can be found on the "Calls" sub-sheet.
Quick observations show that E11 runs more than 12 Calls per day, while T11 contributes more than 4 more per day to the Total Station Call Volume. Based on the Call Volume observed and utilizing the dispatch call matrices, as well as estimating Station 11 apparatus response times, roughly Two-Thirds (~66%) of the Station 11 Call Volume is run within it's normal response area.
Overall, most calls are not "in-district" limits. Large contributing factors to this include the wide response area of T11, where a truck would be added to a call and T11 is the closest a most appropriate for that response, despite that it is in another Engine's district. Roughly One Third (~33%) of the Station 11 call volume originates from Station 7 and Station 4 districts. Due to the large call volume in those districts, other units must supplement call volume when E7 and E4 are otherwise indisposed.
Updates on observations will be provided as more data becomes available. Other potential investigations could include how this data compares to other Stations with an Engine and a Truck. It would be interesting to see the percentage of District Call Volume that E7 and E4 occupy vs. the Percentage of Call Volume in their districts that other units run.
E11 averages more than 12 calls a day on B-Division days
T11 averages more than 4 calls a day on B-Division days
Station 11 Units run more than 2/3 (~66%) of it's Call Volume in it's "normal response area"
Approx. 1/3 (~33%) of Station 11 Call Volume stems from the districts of Station 4 and 7
Future data exploration should include a determination of the "normal" percentage of Call Volume run in a district by units from it's own station
