Empowering Families Through Financial Literacy
On November 14, 2024, the San Diego Center for Economic Education (SDCEE) hosted a Family Financial Fun Night at Kempton Literacy Academy in Spring Valley, CA, where families came together for fun, hands-on activities focused on financial literacy.
The evening featured four interactive financial literacy stations:
Earning Power: Helping participants understand the connection between education, career choices, and income potential.
Savings and Me: Highlighting the importance of setting goals and saving for the future.
Planning for a Pet: Using budgeting for pet ownership to teach about recurring and unexpected expenses.
Needs and Wants: Exploring how to differentiate essential spending from discretionary items for better budgeting.
Janet Josa, Principal of Kempton Literacy Academy, a dual-language immersion school, kicked off the evening with a warm welcome in both English and Spanish, creating an inclusive environment for all attendees. While children explored the stations, parents and guardians participated in a financial literacy session, gaining valuable tools to manage their finances.
A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated SDCEE Advisory Board members: Rickeena Boyd Kamei, John H. Parker, and Louis Lange, and North Island Credit Union volunteers: Shadi Poustchi and Summer Yousif for their leadership and support.
Jeanie Machado-Tyler, Vice President of Instruction at Cuyamaca College, led an activity and distributed bookbags with age-appropriate materials from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as well as Cuyamaca College and Grossmont College branded merchandise—helping reinforce the importance of higher education.
Certificates of participation, generously provided by Supervisor Monica Montgomery-Steppe, were presented to children and their parents/guardians, recognizing their commitment to building brighter, financially secure futures.
This event highlighted the power of community collaboration in fostering financial literacy and empowering families for a stronger tomorrow.

🌟 Exciting News from the San Diego Center for Economic Education! 🌟
On September 23, 2024, SDCEE Director Anthony Zambelli had the pleasure of hosting a Family Financial Fun Night at John Parker Elementary School in Las Vegas, NV. This impactful event was funded by the American Association of Debt Resolution (AADR), with dedicated volunteers engaging with 70 children and their caregivers.
As a 100% Title I school, John Parker Elementary serves families in need, making our efforts even more significant. The evening kicked off with delicious pizzas provided by AADR, and each child received a backpack filled with age-appropriate personal finance books from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, along with gift cards funded by AADR.
We were honored to be invited by the Council for Economic Education to lead this event, especially since there isn't a Center for Economic Education in Las Vegas. Our experience conducting Family Financial Fun Nights in San Diego County helped ensure the success of this gathering.
Together, we are making strides in promoting financial literacy in our communities! 💡📚
