We suggest to bring $50-150/USD per day for incidentals, personal expenses, and additional meals
General travel insurance is not required but international medical insurance is required for travel in Cuba. Due to the US embargo insurance coverage does not pay direct in Cuba therefore US air carriers include this as part of the airfare purchased from the United States to Cuba (American, Delta, Jet Blue, etc). This is uniquely incorporate only for airfare from the US to Cuba.
We accept checks, ACH payments, Venmo, Zelle and we can also invoice via PayPal for credit cards charges. Unfortunately, credit card charges incur a 5% service fee, and we would prefer to avoid that for you.
There are always safety risks when traveling, however we will provide the delegation with plenty of predeparture information to mediate risks from health (such as dengue exposure) to US State Department regulations (Cuba is currently at a level 2 safety threat).
No! U.S.-issued credit cards, debit cards, and travelers checks do not work in Cuba and should not be relied upon for any portion of your trip.
While some establishments may accept credit cards issued by banks outside the United States, these transactions can be unreliable due to connectivity issues, internet outages, and banking transfer limitations. As a result, cash remains the most dependable form of payment throughout the country.
Participants should plan to bring sufficient cash to cover any personal expenses for the duration of their trip. Fortunately, most major program costs are already included in the program fee, so out-of-pocket expenses are typically limited to souvenirs, additional beverages, personal purchases, and optional activities.
U.S. dollars, Euros, and Canadian dollars are all commonly brought by travelers. Additional guidance on recommended cash amounts and currency exchange procedures will be provided prior to departure.
Cuba uses both 110V and 220V electrical systems. Outlets are typically marked to indicate the voltage being supplied, and travelers should always verify the voltage before plugging in any device.
Most modern electronics, including laptops, phone chargers, tablets, and camera chargers, are designed to operate on both 110V and 220V. However, some appliances such as electric razors, hair dryers, and other personal care devices may not be dual-voltage and could be damaged if connected to the wrong outlet.
We strongly recommend bringing a simple 3-prong-to-2-prong adapter. While many accommodations offer modern electrical outlets, grounded 3-prong outlets are not always available, and some outlets only accept standard 2-prong plugs.
No
No. While Spanish can enhance the experience, it is not required. Program staff, guides, and interpreters are available as needed.
Many U.S. mobile carriers now offer roaming services in Cuba. However, roaming charges can be extremely expensive. For example, AT&T currently charges approximately $2.05 per MB of data, $3.00 per minute for voice calls, $0.50 per text message sent, and $1.30 per photo or multimedia message.
Some carriers advertise that Cuba is included in their international plans, but in practice Cuba is often excluded or subject to separate pricing. We strongly recommend confirming coverage and rates directly with your provider before departure.
For most travelers, we recommend obtaining a local Cuban SIM card or data service for the duration of the program. If you would like assistance arranging local connectivity, please let us know prior to departure. Please note that there is an additional fee associated with arranging local SIM cards or connectivity services.
Once connected, communication platforms such as WhatsApp are generally the most reliable and cost-effective way to stay in touch with family, friends, and colleagues. Internet speeds in Cuba are determined by the local telecommunications infrastructure and will be similar regardless of the carrier or SIM card used.
