Video Series for Parents
Video Series for parents... and teachers
These videos were created by the Surrey Schools Numeracy Helping Teachers because we wanted to wanted to support parents on what their children are learning in Mathematics in Grade 6 or 7.
These videos explore the key concepts behind many of topics, as well as how to solve problems using these concepts.
There are many content learning standards and these series do not address all of them. Rather, we have chosen the concepts considering both the breadth of the content across different strands, as well as which concepts have some particular attention in these grades.
Each video contains a fairly extensive exploration into a concept, not just to find out what children are learning, but also how to learn it and what it means. One is encouraged to pause the video at various points throughout in order to answer a question, or think about what they just learned. We have also highlighted several mathematical vocabulary words throughout the videos.
Once a concept is explored, one is then guided through how to solve some sample problems. On many occasions, more than one strategy is presented. It is important to realize that this isn’t about how to get answers, but rather what is the mathematical thinking that goes into each solution.
Each video ends with how the video addresses big ideas and the learning standards from the British Columbia mathematics curriculum.
To view a video, it is best to switch it to full screen once it starts playing.
