On your way from the College overview presentation, you passed Alumni Science and Daly Science, where a lot of the departments were originally located and made their recent move to the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation (SCDI). Alumni Science still houses the Psychology Department along with some of science classes and labs.
You may have passed O'Connor Hall, one of the historic landmarks and where majority of the Mathematics and Computer Science department is still located because of their love for chalkboards! The rest of Math/CS is in Heafey where we invite you to stop by the Math Learning Center (MLC). It is open to any student for tutorial services and is open for tours today in Heafey 223.
Since the College does not have a graduate program, undergraduates are the lab assistants in our faculty's research labs. They often become co-authors on peer reviewed papers and attend conferences to present their research.
Here is a list of the science departments in the College of Arts and Sciences along with their building locations.
Anthropology (O’Connor Hall)
Biology (SCDI 3111 and Alumni Science)
Chemistry & Biochemistry (SCDI 2117)
Environmental Studies & Sciences (SCDI 2311)
Mathematics & Computer Science (Heafey and O’Connor 5)
Neuroscience (SCDI 3111)
Physics (SCDI 2311)
Psychology (Alumni Science 200)
Public Health (SCDI 3111 and Kenna 110)
Sociology (O’Connor 329)
SCDI = Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation = aka "the new STEM building"
Today's tour in SCDI will feature Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Physics. But, please feel free to stop by the other buildings, if you are curious. There's a lot of science all over SCU!
The Imaginarium+WAVE is an advanced visual and computation computing facility dedicated to mixed reality (VR, AR, mixed reality), data visualization, digital art, and game design located in Heafey 237. Open to students of all disciplines for courses and projects. Tour will be at 1PM. Meet at the info table in SCDI courtyard to walk across to Heafey.
Since this is a big building, we will cover some highlights in the courtyard before going in and up the stairs to the 3rd floor. Feel free to visit any of the stops where faculty and Broncos are eager to show you what they do!
We start at the Sordello Family Courtyard where you see lots of great open study, collaboration, and lounge spaces. Whether inside or outside, this newest building of our campus was designed with a lot of touchdown spaces for flexibility and gathering in studying, lounging, collaboration and socializing.
SCDI is shaped like a "U" from the John and Susan Ocampo North Wing to the Stephen A. Finn East Wing and the Thomas & Dorothy Leavey Foundation South Wing.
Classrooms and labs are in the inner part of the "U". Research labs and offices are on the outskirt of the "U".
Elevators, restrooms, and stairs in each wing including all-gender restrooms and water bottle filling stations.
There are kitchenette lounge spaces with microwaves at the landing of each floor at the central Haughey Family Grand Staircase.
Every floor has a mix of science and engineering departments.
Day use lockers are available throughout the building to stow away your lunch bag or your backpack.
Each department also hosts several academic clubs and honor societies. Make sure you visit department info tables at our neighborhood clusters!
You'll find the Biology department, Neuroscience program, and (applause) the recently designated Public Health department!
Research lab (SCDI 3315) - Meet Leilani Miller and her research students as they tell you about exciting opportunities for undergraduate research and show you their organisms and equipment. Dr. Miller can also speak to prestigious awards at SCU as she used to direct our Honors Program. Tours are 10AM-2PM.
Don't forget to explore the lounge areas. Where might you camp out for study groups?
Bar height club lockers are available in the South Wing.
Step out into the solar covered Goldman Terrace in the North Wing, one of the most popular places to relax and socialize!
You'll find the departments for Physics, Environmental Studies & Sciences, and Chemistry & Biochemistry on this floor.
Physics is not only home to the Physics major but also the Engineering Physics major. A popular alternative for those interested in a career in engineering. Checkout the numerous techie labs in the Physics department south wing. Besides advanced labs, there are also numerous undergraduate research labs. Be sure to talk to Chris Weber's research students on the First Floor!
Chemistry & Biochemistry is one of our largest departments with numerous STEM and pre-health students taking general chemistry labs. Take a tour with Steve Suljak's research students from 9:30-1:30, tours hourly on the half hour. Meet at the department info table in the courtyard.
Stop by the Diversity Inclusion Student Center (DISC) in SCDI 2306. It's one of the coolest places to hang out, grab a snack, club meetings, and hosts career and wellness events.
Bar height club lockers are available in the South Wing.
Not afraid of heights? The North Wing has an overlook balcony to the going ons of the Bird Innovation Zone below.
Whew! You've wound your way back down to the first floor. Lots to see, here's just a sample:
Because a lot of shops and equipment on in the North Wing, come and talk to Physics students in Chris Weber's research lab (SCDI 1106 + 1108). Tours are afternoon only.
While there, around the corner is the Bird Innovation Zone. Any student, faculty, or staff can get trained and create!
The Bruzzone Fresh Bytes cafe has tasty tapas and free fruit infused water. Grab something while studying or hanging out in the patio sunshine.
The Thomas & Dorothy Leavey Foundation South Wing has a bank of gleaming chemistry labs along with study tables.
The Imaginarium+WAVE (Heafey 237), an advanced visual and computation computing facility dedicated to mixed reality (VR, AR, mixed reality), data visualization, digital art, and game design. Students will show you the equipment and projects in this cool space used by classrooms and clubs.
the Math Learning Center (MLC, Heafey 223) is open to any student for tutorial services, drop-in or appointment.
