Elevating Social Justice in South County
South County, RI. In the heart of Washington County RI, affectionately known as South County, a transformative force is taking root. The South County Social Justice Coalition (SCSJC) is making waves as an evolving network of faith and justice groups, providers, organizations, and individuals, all united by a shared vision of fostering a supportive and caring community.
The SCSJC is not just a coalition—it's a communication network dedicated to weaving together the tapestry of social justice efforts in South County and beyond. The coalition’s mission is to connect parties that span the entire spectrum of social justice initiatives, from providing essential needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare to working towards systemic changes from climate initiatives to local ordinances that might prevent individuals from falling into vulnerable situations.
At the forefront of their activities is the SCSJC's weekly email newsletter—a vibrant digest of events, needs, and programs shaping the landscape of South County. This communication hub aims to connect individuals and organizations engaged in making a positive impact to encourage collaboration.
The coalition doesn't stop at digital connections; it comes alive through quarterly meetings that serve as pivotal moments to chart the path forward. The next gathering is set for Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 6:30 PM, hosted at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of South County at Lily Pads, 27 North Road, Peace Dale, RI 02879. Christopher Little, Chair of the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of South Kingstown, will be the esteemed guest speaker, shedding light on the evolving housing crisis and South Kingstown's proposed solutions. The community is invited to attend.
Etta Zasloff, a key member of the SCSJC Leadership Team, emphasizes, "Our goal is to collaborate, communicate, and educate each other about the impactful work happening across South County. By uniting our efforts and sharing resources, we can make a more significant impact and promote positive change."
Joanne Haynes, Editor of the weekly SCSJ newsletter, echoes the sentiment: "Our newsletter is a spotlight on the incredible programs and projects in South County, reaching beyond our usual circles to connect, support, and learn from each other. Together, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate society."
All members of the community are invited to engage with the SCSJC at their own comfort level—volunteer, attend community events, or simply share the newsletter within personal or organizational networks. The SCSJC welcomes organizations addressing equity, diversity, cultural responsiveness, and support at any level in South County.
