New to Scratch

Completely New to Scratch?

Complete the Getting Started Intro (step-by-step online tutorial) OR Create a New Project and follow the PDF Getting Started Guide.

OR

Go through my introduction to Scratch for my students which includes some of the Getting Started items. Students end up with 10-11 mini Scratch projects once these mini-lessons are completed. These would not necessarily need to be saved but could be.

First, learn to make sprites move:

    1. Move forever: Video Tutorial
    2. Key moves: Video Tutorial / Scratch Card
    3. Follow the mouse: Video Tutorial / Scratch Card
    4. Glide: Video Tutorial / Scratch Card
    5. Moving Animation: Video Tutorial / Scratch Card
    6. Spin: Video Tutorial / Scratch Card

Then, move on to learning various ways to change the appearance of a sprite.

    1. Change color: Scratch Card
    2. Dance Twist: Scratch Card
    3. Animate It: Scratch Card

Then, learn to have "conversations" between multiple sprites. The Knock, Knock joke (#1) is a good way to learn and practice this.

    1. Scratch Conversation Tutorial (video created by 8th grade student)
    2. Scratch - Conversations (longer tutorial by me for Scratch Mission projects which shows 2 ways to do this. The 2nd way is covered in the tutorial above.)
    3. My Knock, Knock Joke Example

If students are going to create games that need to keep score, I have them create a mini project based on an 8th grade Student Video Tutorial or the simpler Keeping Score Scratch Card.

Once students know how to do these basic things, they can go on to create simple curricular projects.
