Women in Sports in Ottawa
The late 19th century to the early to mid-20th century was an inspiring time for women's involvement in Ottawa's athletic scene. Female athletes excelled in a variety of sports, paving the way for future generations and transforming women's roles in competitive and recreational activities. The sports which were frequently mentioned in newspaper articles in the Historical Society of Ottawa's scrapbooks included badminton, curling, figure skating, and golf, emphasizing their importance in women's athletic achievements.
In addition to participating in these sports, women were instrumental in introducing and organizing many athletic activities and associations in Ottawa, including helping to bring ice hockey to the region. While these sports provided competitive outlets, they also served as important social spaces where women could challenge traditional barriers and build social spaces.
Their efforts attracted media attention, which worked to reflect and shape public opinions of female athletes in Ottawa. Scrapbooks from the Historical Society of Ottawa honour these astounding achievements and provide a detailed look at the evolution of women's sports through the persepctive of local history.
