ICCPR enshrines the right to Public Participation & Transparency in Governance
"Every citizen shall have the right and the opportunity, without any of the distinctions mentioned in
article 2 and without unreasonable restrictions:
(a) To take part in the conduct of public affairs, directly or through freely chosen representatives"
If ICCPR was passed into Scottish law, it would mean major decisions affecting the wellbeing of the country could not happen without public consultation. Decisions such as:
The closure of Grangemouth oil refinery
Freeports and Special Economic Zones
The public consultation could include holding referendums. In Switzerland referendums are held four times a year on issues of national concern.
The people of Scotland are largely bystanders when it comes to key decisions affecting their country. It is time to change that. Sign the petition:
