Below are three suggested heat related projects that can be completed at the end of the lessons. These are designed to provide inspiration to students while combining the various topics that students have learned about throughout the eight lessons. I challenge you to think of your own idea!
You have been hired as an expert on heat to help design a pool for your community. As a heat expert, you have extensive knowledge in areas such as:
how to measure temperature
heat transfer
heating and insulating technologies
heat capacities
The members of the community want to be able to use the pool for three or four months of the summer. To do this, they need a heater. They would also like the temperature of the water to stay at a specific temperature that they can set and control. The questions and concerns that you have to address are:
Where should the heater be placed in the pool?
What material should the pool be made of?
What type of heating technology would be ideal to heat the water?
How can we measure the temperature of the water on a regular basis?
To display your findings and suggestions to the community, you can create a PowerPoint, a poster board, a scale model, a letter, a speech, a video or any other method of communication. Make sure that you address all of their questions and concerns. Be creative!
You are going to hike Mount Everest in a few weeks. You are starting to create a packing list of what you should bring. The hiking guide that you have been talking to online has told you that you can only bring one backpack, or else it will be too difficult and heavy to hike. You need to make sure that you bring enough clothes to keep you warm. But you have to be smart about what you pack!
You first should make a list about all the different articles of clothing you think you will need on the hike. When you have your list of items, what are some of the things you need to start thinking about to make sure you pack the best items?
Questions to think about:
How cold is it on Mount Everest?
How can you pack everything with it all being as light as possible?
What materials are the best to keep you warm? (ex: denim, wool)
Does colour matter?
This project will require a bit of research and creativity! You can create a poster, a blog post, a brochure or another medium to show the different articles of clothing that you are bringing with your research included. Other people who are going to hike Mount Everest would love to know your findings!
Heat and technology have been combined for a long time and we use heat related technology every single day! Your task is to choose four or five different heat related technologies that have been developed over the last 100 years. You should have technology from different decades. Whichever technologies you chose, you should include:
When it was invented
Who invented it
What do we use the technology for
How does the technology transfer heat
How does the technology produce heat
You can choose to create a timeline of how heat related technology has developed over time, you can create an informational brochure about the technology, you can create a product advertisement to appeal to customers or another way to display and share the information. Be creative and have fun!
For each section of the heat unit, there are suggested activities that can be completed to help further understanding of the material. This website was created by the authors of the Grade 7 Science and Technology text book.
