Through holistic approaches to education, learners evolve from passive to active learners. Hence the learning should progress and evolve in a combination from:
Transmission Level: Knowledge and skills are passed down from teacher to student. In this level, knowledge is seen as fixed and not as a process. (Miller, 2019, p.13)
Transaction Level: A more constructivist approach to obtaining knowledge and skills where students play an active role in their learning process. In this level, knowledge is seen as something that can change overtime. (Miller, 2019, p.14)
Transformative Level: Focuses on the "Whole learner". Knowledge and skills grow the learner on a physical , social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual level. In this level, knowledge is viewed as transdisciplinary, where there is multiple interconnections to various subject disciplines. (Miller, 2019, p.15)
It is at the transformative level in the learning process where students develop higher consciousness and deeper understanding of the big ideas taught in class.
