Light-matter interactions and nonequilibrium dynamics

Michael Schüler

Welcome to our group!

Our group is at home at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) as a part of the Laboratory for Materials Simulations (LMS), and at the University of Fribourg. Our research focuses on "hunting" characteristic signatures of quantum materials at the intersection of theoretical condensed matter physics and spectroscopy. We are particularly interested in how to quantum properties like band topology, orbital texture and microscopic interactions can be extracted from experiments. We also investigate ultrafast dynamics and transient band structure engineering by tailored light.

New paper on ultrafast Floquet physcs: Nature 616, 696 (2023)

New material properties, at lightning speed and on demand - this vision is fuelled by recent findings of a Europe-wide physics research group with key contributions from the University of Fribourg. The team uses ultra-short and strong light fields to directly observe how exotic energetic states, so-called Floquet bands, form in a crystal. The scientists report their findings in the research journal Nature.

Since January 2023, our group has moved to the Laboratory for Materials Simulations (LMS) and to the University of Fribourg. Our group has grown! Welcome to Gian and Juan Felipe!
