On the 22nd of September 2026, the REC hosted its first leadership + invite excursion to Swan Hill.
Swan Hill is a border city along the Murray River, previously being a Borough. It serves as a major city for vehicles passing into Victoria/New South Wales. It is about 302 Kilometres from Melbourne, as the crow flies.
One of the main goals for this excursion was being able to ride an N-class locomotive hauled service before it gets retired from the V/Line fleet. Currently (as of the time of writing), the N-class only operates on four services to and from Swan Hill per day, with four total services in the morning and afternoon running locomotive-hauled services. This excursion was planned mainly around the train, so attendees booked tickets in the first-class car to enjoy maximum comfort throughout the nine hours of journeying.
We made the most of the short time we had in Swan Hill, we crossed into the border twice, went to one of the "Giant Things" in Australia, and had to leave before we knew it.
