Associate Degree in Nursing vs. Bachelor of Science in Nursing, which is the right choice?
An Associate's Degree in nursing (ADN) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) are two educational pathways for registered nurses (RNs)—ADN nursing is a two-year program, and BSN is a four-year program.
The primary difference between the two is the length of time and the depth of knowledge they offer. While a BSN might have more job opportunities and earn higher salaries than the other, both can provide quality patient care and require passing the NCLEX exam.
Employers are expressing a strong preference for new nurses with baccalaureate preparation. Findings from AACN latest survey on the Employment of New Nurse Graduates show that nearly 28% of employers require new hires to have a bachelor’s degree while 72% strongly prefer baccalaureate-prepared nurse (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, April 2024)
