This aim of this workgroup is to increase parent participation in the education of their children at home and within the school by empowering families through shared decision-making and by connecting them with a variety of supports. These supports include programs such as parent leadership and parenting education, continuing education, access to clothing and food pantries, opportunities for input into school decision-making, and programs that place parents directly in the school as classroom support roles or as community school resource staff. The workgroup also collaborates with the school to identify areas where parents and families are disengaged and to find solutions for obstacles such as parents’ previous negative experiences with the school or education in general, language barriers and/or cultural differences, issues of race and class between the parents, school staff and sometimes other parents within the school.
