Frequently Asked Questions
Although it would be helpful, no prior experience in tutoring/mentorship is necessary to apply!
No, there is not an interview process involved in the application process. However random drop-ins within sessions will be conducted throughout the season just to make sure things are going well.
Prior to the session, send an email to your mentee and cc the scholarsinstem10@gmail.com with an invitation to a Google Meet (this should be a recurrent link). Finish preparing your presentation or learning materials. A good tip is to prepare more material than you think you will go through just in case the session runs a little fast!
There is no particular format for the sessions since every mentee has different needs. You can ask them about their interest, if there are any particular topics they would like to cover, or a particular takeaway they would like to achieve from the program, in order to get an idea of what your lesson plans might look like. You can also refer to the “Courses” section of the website to see possible lesson topics. Course materials can take form in anything from videos, kahoots, short quizzes or presentation slides. We also have a Google Drive File of some of the past session materials that our mentors have made, to be used as a resource.
Yes, it is mandatory that you have your camera on (both mentor and mentee) for the entire session. This is to ensure a better learning experience and a sense of community for maximum engagement during every session.
Yes, it is mandatory that you take a session screenshot with your mentee and upload it onto the Feedback form that you fill out towards the end of every session. This is needed for logistical purposes and to ensure that meetings are occurring as scheduled, even when board members don’t drop by.
After every session, you will be required to fill out a Feedback Form inquiring about the session's duration and so will your mentee (to be cross-referenced). Your response to these forms will be collected to calculate the number of service hours that you will receive. You are held accountable for filling these forms out after every session.
Generally, 1-3 weeks after the conclusion of the season, you will be emailed an official statement with your community service hours.
Upon successful completion of the program, mentees will be emailed a Certificate of Completion 1-3 weeks after the conclusion of the program.
