At Scholar Academy, we believe every student can learn and grow with the right support. Our Special Education team works with students who have disabilities that impact their ability to access and make progress in the general education curriculum.
Special Education is not extra help or tutoring. It is a specialized service provided under the federal law known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for students who have a qualifying disability and need specially designed instruction.
Special Education provides individualized instruction and services for students with disabilities who require support beyond what is available through general education interventions alone.
To qualify for Special Education, a student must:
Have a disability recognized under IDEA.
Demonstrate that the disability impacts educational performance.
Need specially designed instruction.
Not every student who struggles academically or has a disability qualifies for Special Education. Many students may receive support through classroom interventions, small-group instruction, or other general education supports.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) | U.S. Department of Education
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a plan developed for students who qualify for Special Education by a team that includes parents, educators, and specialists. The IEP outlines a student's strengths, needs, goals, accommodations, and services.
IEPs and 504 Plans both support students with disabilities, but they are not the same.
IEP: Provides specialized instruction, services, and goals for students who need more than accommodations.
504 Plan: Provides accommodations and supports to help students access learning in the general education setting.
If you have concerns about your child's learning, behavior, communication, or development, the following steps can help determine your child's needs and available supports or interventions.
Talk with your child's teacher(s) and share your concerns.
Targeted interventions or supports may be provided through our MTSS intervention process.
The MTSS/CMT team will monitor progress data to determine next steps which could include an evaluation to determine eligibility for Special Education under IDEA.
Scholar Academy does not diagnose medical or educational disabilities. Medical diagnoses must be made by qualified healthcare professionals.
