The SHPA Project is an interdisciplinary training program designed to equip school psychologists and school counselors with the knowledge and skills necessary to support Native American and Indigenous (NAI) youth. Rooted in Indigenous cultural values, the program integrates Traditional Knowledge, decolonizing methodologies, and strength-based interventions to address the unique needs of NAI students, particularly in special education. Participants engage in weekly seminars, fieldwork at partner schools, summer immersion experiences, and national professional presentations, all while receiving financial support, mentorship, and specialized training. Through this cohort-based model, SHPA scholars commit to serving Native communities upon graduation, ensuring culturally responsive and effective educational and psychological services. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the project aims to bridge the gap in trained professionals working with Indigenous youth.
