FAQ

How Do I Join?

Joining our social media, especially signing up for our email list and joining our Discord, will give you frequent updates. You can join our social media here.

What Kind of Archery Do You Shoot?

Our main style of archery is Olympic Recurve. Compound bows, crossbows, and longbows are NOT allowed on campus, but you are allowed to bring compound bows to our off-campus practices at Medford Archery Forum.

If you have your own equipment, you must store them in our club closet and NOT in the residence halls. See mandatory forms for more information.

Do I Have to Pay for Equipment?

No. Members are not required to pay for anything. All equipment is provided for you, but we strongly recommend that you buy your own finger tab and arm guard to reduce equipment sharing.

Do I Need Experience to Join? Do I Need to Tryout?

Nope! We welcome people of all levels of experience, including beginners, throughout the academic year. You do not need to tryout to join.

Can I Bring My Own Equipment?

Yes! You can bring your own equipment to practice but there are a few caveats.

Due to new policy (as of October, 2021), all SBU Company of Archers members who have their own equipment must store them in our closet at the MAC Courts instead of at the Residence Halls.

Please note that the only people who have access to this closet are Rec Center Pro Staff and Archery E-Board members. You will NOT have personal access to this closet (unless you are a SBU Company of Archers E-Board Member or Rec Center Pro Staff) and will need to request an Archery E-Board member to retrieve your equipment by emailing archery_club@stonybrook.edu.

If you have your own equipment that you are planning on bringing to campus please fill out the Personal Equipment Form. If you would like to acquire the form please email us or talk to us at practice first.

What is a takedown recurve bow?

Takedown recurve specifically refers to bows that you can separate the limbs from the riser. Bows that cannot be disassembled do not qualify as takedown. Please do not bring your bow on campus unless it is takedown recurve regardless of whether or not it is stored on campus.

I want to buy my own finger tab and arm guard. How do I get started?

Please refer to these instructions to buy only finger tabs and arm guards. If you are interested in buying other equipment, please consult this page.

We buy all of our archery equipment from Lancaster Archery. We recommend this finger tab and this arm guard if you plan on coming to practice often. If you'd like to practice your form, we recommend this stretch band. Although we can supply you with all of the above, we strongly encourage you to buy your own to reduce equipment sharing; they are also not that expensive. Out of the three, the finger tab is nicest to have one of your own.

*When choosing a finger tab, the "Hand" option refers to your dominant (writing) hand.

If they're out of stock, or you just want a different color, you can always go through Lancaster Archery's large supply of finger tabs and arm guards. Here are some pointers to help you choose if you're a beginner:

Do I Need to Sign-Up For Practices?

On-campus practices do not require members to sign up in advance but you will need to sign in once you arrive. Please make sure to complete the liability and club roster forms linked here before attending your first practice.

Off-campus practices do require members to sign up in advance via a Google Form. The form is sent out every week via email and social media. Sign-ups are limited to a maximum of 15 members with priority given to those who can drive others to off-campus practice.

Do I Need to Attend All Practices?

No. Anyone is welcome to stop by when they can!

For our on-campus practices, you are not obligated to stay for the whole duration, so you can come late/leave early if you want.

Just remember that if you need to arrive late/leave early for our off-campus practice (which are canceled this semester), you will need to have your own means of transportation.

I'm a Grad Student/Not an SBU Student. Can I Still Join?

Graduate students are allowed to participate in SBU undergraduate clubs. Graduate students must pay for a Recreation Center membership in order to attend indoor practices.

Unfortunately, it is against school policy for non-SBU students to participate in SBU clubs. However, you are welcome to join us at our off-campus practices at Medford Archery Forum given that we have space available. If you are interested in doing so, please email us!

What is a Field Marshal? How Can I Be One?

Field marshals are committed and active members of our club. They are responsible for range safety and are authorized to give range commands. Field Marshals also serve as representatives for other members and are often involved in E-Board meetings. E-Board members are field marshals by default.

The nominations and elections of field marshals are done at the beginning of every semester and are held within the E-Board and are not done by self-nomination.

The E-Board will evaluate members based on the following criteria:

If you have been nominated, you will receive an email. You are free to turn down the position if you're not interested!
