Here in the short future, the Planning Commission will review a new plat submitted by the developer. While at this exact moment we do not have a date for the Planning Commission meeting, we know it will be after June. To stay up to date and to have reminders on this date please join our email list! Please fill out this Google form.
Revising the original plat, the developer has submitted a new plat to the City for approval. In addition, they are requesting a rezoning for the proposed subsidized apartment project in the complex. This process is sent first to the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission for approval before being presented to the Lawrence City Commission for final approval or denial. The new plan and the details about it can be found here.
We developed an online petition demanding that the Planning Commission and City Commission refuse any future rezonings, investigate the illegitimate local permit that was issued, and initiate rezonings that are in adherence to the Comprehensive Plan to preserve the floodplain and wetlands on the development site. The petition can be found here. (NOTE: Change.org will ask for a donation, this does NOT go to us! Do not donate unless you want to donate directly to Change.org)
In addition to signing the petition, we encourage all individuals to send public comments to both Commissions. The general comment email for the Planning Department is planning@lawrenceks.org. Additionally, it can also be helpful to start submitting general public comment to the City Commission before it appears on their agenda. The email for the City Commissioners general comment is commissioners@lawrenceks.org. We are working on getting a link that will fill out this information for you, please be patient and check for updates!. We will send you an email update if you sign up for our email list here.
While we encourage each individual to write their own mini speech, we have some topics that we highlight. Click the links to learn more:
Floodplains and wetlands: their benefits, their role in flood mitigation, their role in climate change regulation
HINU, lack of Tribal/Nation consultation, and lack of respect for culturally sensitive topics, such as child burial sites, Haskell's history as a residential school, and artifact collection onsite
The City breaking the Development Code and lack of adherence to County/City documents affirming conservation
Listen to our member Melinda and Michael discuss this project with Teresa Wilke on EcoRadioKC! Teresa reminds us that this fight is historical in nature, the fight for the Wakarusa Wetlands has spanned decades. She also speaks from personal experience about housing and continued foundational problems living in the Yankee Tank tributary. Micahel reminds us that this developer, Phil Bundy, has attempted to develop this plot of land for over a decade and how the permit is questionably violating our current floodplain regulations. Melinda also explains the process that allowed the illegitimate permit to be approved and the concerns with putting subsidized housing in the floodplain.
