CVA is overseen by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). It is one of the many Alternative Learning Experiences (ALE) offered in the state of Washington. An ALE is defined as "...public education where some or all of the instruction is delivered outside of a regular classroom schedule" (Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, 2020).
All ALE's must follow public education requirements mandated by the state of Washington.
According to the State requirements all ALS's must provide Written Student Learning Plans (WSLP), Weekly Contact, Monthly Reviews and Annual Assessments.
Here is how these requirements play out at CVA
Written Student Learning Plan (WSLP)
This is plan that is created once the student is enrolled. This document is created by an academic advisor at CVA. This document outlines the studnets learning plan, goals, timelines and objectives for each course a student would take at CVA. This is a fluid document and can be updated or changed as needed.
To the right you will see a sample WSLP provided by OSPI
Weekly Contact
CVA requires weekly communication between the student and the teacher. This communication can be done in various ways. It could be a phone call, emails, video chat or ever feedback on work.
This also counts as a studnets attendance for the week. Attendance is mandatory and there are consequences for student who do not check in and connect weekly with their teachers.
The video to the left is a great resouces that walks studnets though how to communicate with their teacher through CVA's various platforms.

Monthly Reviews
At CVA the monthly review is crucial. It is the best way to track that students are achieving goals and benchmarks noted in their WSLP. The monthly review may be in the form of a project, assessment or interactions. Parent, Student and Teacher conferences will occur to discuss the progress.
CVA makes it very easy to review the progress reports. They have posted this screenshot on their site for easy reference.
Annual Assessment
Like any schools district, there are mandatory state assessments that studnets who attend CVA must take. The assessment is required for all full time students in grades 3-8 and 10-12. These assessments are created and implemented by the OPSI.
