In 2021, during COVID-19 lockdowns, I recognized the lack of engagement and sense of community due to the isolation caused by social distancing measures. As teenagers, communication and social interaction is vital for our development, and I longed for the connections I had prior to the pandemic. I decided to create a social platform where like-minded students can collaborate and bring awareness to current issues, as well and brainstorm next steps to foster critical thinking skills and solution based approaches to addressing real world issues.
I founded The Midnight Magazine, an online community newspaper for students within my school community and the GTA to gather and explore their passions.
I managed a team of over 20 hard-working students, creating content for our magazine publication. I developed an internal organizational system to manage the various teams involved in the creation of our final project, developing strong project management and organizational skills.
For the next two years, my team and I worked diligently at producing monthly newspaper mock-ups, as well as continuously brainstorming for ways to create a positive impact in our community. TMM is currently still operating under new management. For more information, please contact themidnightmagazine@gmail.com.
In September of 2021, the TMM team decided it was time for us to take action on some of the issues we had been commenting on for the past year. We realized something we all had in common, tons and tons of unused stuff laying around the house. We decided to collect the items we could no longer find a use for, and donate them to a garage sale where all proceeds would then be delivered to youth shelters in our city. After months of preparations and two successful garage sale dates, we raised $500, donating all proceeds and unsold items to charity.
The garage sale campaign provided me with an opportunity to harness the power of community to create a larger impact. I was in a position to inspire my friends around me to find their own passion projects and to create their own impacts.
