Sarah Saunders - Health Department

Public Health Ontario serves as a partner in health, working with local health departments to prevent illness and improve health (Public Health Ontario 2019). As a Registered Nurse in Ontario, I am working within an acute care hospital placing me at a local health level. My place setting within the healthcare setting is patient focused, hands on care providing restorative care. Our hospitals within Ottawa are funded through our local health integration network (LHIN). The LHIN hold agreements with local hospitals and publicly funded healthcare facilities determining services, finances, and performance outcome expectations (Public Health Ontario 2019).

Regulated Health Professions Act 1991

Within Ontario, all healthcare professionals are regulated and governed by the Regulated Health Professions Act. The act allows healthcare professionals to be accountable within a self-governed role while protecting the public.

Projects

Below is a list of projects I have been involved in, highlighting my professional work to date.

At Winchester District Memorial Hospital I hold a duel role as a Labour and Delivery nurse as well as an after hours Charge Nurse. Winchester is a well known rural hospital that has a spectacular Labour and Delivery program. In 2020 I initiated a project to serve our surrounding community during hard times of a Pandemic. There was no access to soon to be parents that would allow them to tour our unit, become familiar with the obstetrical program and provide comfort in their upcoming life changing journey. I developed and implemented a virtual tour of the hospital starting from admission, moving to labour and delivery and ending with postpartum care.
