Building Laredo's Future — One Step at a Time
For 45 years, the Guajolote 10k Run has been a cornerstone of the Laredo community, connecting fitness and education through our annual run and walk and our college scholarship program for Laredo students.
In 1979, the father-and-daughter duo Santiago and Gloria Sanchez founded Laredo’s first 10-kilometer running event. Their tradition of welcoming participants from all walks of life encouraged Laredoans to embrace an active lifestyle.
In 2017, Gloria and her daughter Marie Sanchez Webber established the Santiago Sanchez Foundation scholarship fund. Open to high school students who have participated in our event, the scholarships are administered through Laredo College. We have awarded recipients from various Laredo high schools, including Zapata High School.
We believe that running can open doors. Our scholarship recipients are high school students who have participated in the Guajolote 10K at least twice — making physical activity a direct pathway to higher education at Laredo College.

Our Mission:
The Santiago Sanchez Foundation exists to create educational opportunities for Laredo's youth through community fitness. We award scholarships to high school juniors and seniors who have participated in the Guajolote 10K Race at least twice, enabling them to attend Laredo College. We also organize the annual Hamilton Trophies Guajolote 10K Race — a beloved Thanksgiving morning tradition that promotes health, wellness, and community connection across Laredo.
