UnGrading In Ethnic Studies 120

The framework I use in our course is called UnGrading. It is inspired by a body of scholars focussed on the science of learning (meta-cognition) and social justice in education.  An earned grade will still be submitted after the completion of a student self evaluation.

Ungrading?  How?

The video explains an abridged (short) version on how Ungrading will be implemented in our online learning environment. The implementation of Ungrading will be provided in the Orientation Module is Canvas. Grades are earned and justified through a student self evaluation process.

What is a Student Self Evaluation?

No Grading.  All Feedback & Guidance

Inspired by Laura Gibbs' approach, all-feedback-no grades, I do not put grades on student work. Instead I give lots of feedback and guidance toward successful outcomes. Students receive a COMPLETE when the assignment criteria is met.  Students who do not meet the criteria receive an opportunity to RE-DO the assignment.  After all, learning can be scary and messy.  In short, in this class, it's OK to mess up.  You will be given a second chance (or third, or forth).

ALternative Assessments

I embrace non-traditional methods, valuing individuality, original creative work and emphasizing resilience and empowerment. The final "grade" emphasizes the importance of reflection and self-assessment, rather than traditional grading methods. The ultimate goal is to create a dynamic, inclusive, and empowering learning environment that values the unique experiences and perspectives of each student while fostering a deeper understanding of Chicano history, culture, and identity.

The developments in the California colleges and universities follow a March 2022 report to the University of California Board of Regents' Academic and Student Affairs Committee that said traditional grading methods could perpetuate bias; the report encouraged highrer education to explore new means of assessment. That is exactly what I am doing.

There is no voice-over in the video. Visual descriptors are available in the video description via YouTube.

Grades Suck

The video presents an argument representing my practice and my core beliefs about learning and the problems with grades. The  implementation of UnGrading will be provided in the Orientation Module is Canvas.

"Agency, dialogue, self actualization, and social justice are not possible in a hierarchical system that pits teachers against students and encourages competition by ranking students against one another.  Grades are currency for a capitalist system that reduces teaching and learning to a mere transaction." - Jesse Stommel.
